National Diploma (ND) in Computer Science –
Programme Overview

The National Diploma (ND) in Computer Science is a practical, industry-focused programme designed to equip students with foundational and professional skills in computing, programming, networking, and systems management. The programme prepares graduates to operate effectively in today’s digital-driven environment and provides a strong pathway for further studies or entry-level employment in the ICT sector.

 

The programme aims to produce competent computer science technicians who can apply computing knowledge across various areas of information technology, including software development, hardware maintenance, networking, and enterprise systems.

Students enrolled in the ND Computer Science programme will gain hands-on and theoretical knowledge in areas such as:

  • Computer systems operation and maintenance

  • Programming using C, Java, Visual Basic, HTML, and UML

  • Data structures, algorithms, and systems analysis

  • Web technologies and internet applications

  • Computer networking and basic network management

  • Digital electronics and hardware troubleshooting

  • Software applications and operating systems

  • Information systems and file management

Programme Structure

The ND in Computer Science runs for two academic years, comprising:

  • Four semesters of classroom, laboratory, and practical learning

  • A 3–4 month Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) after the first year, providing real-world industry exposure

The curriculum is structured to balance theory and practice, with a strong emphasis on hands-on skills development.

Entry Requirements

Admission into the programme requires:

  • A minimum of five (5) credit passes in SSCE, NECO, NABTEB, or equivalent (not more than two sittings), including:

    • English Language

    • Mathematics

    • Physics

    • Two other relevant science or technical subjects

  • UTME/JAMB requirements as prescribed by national education policy

  • Other approved technical qualifications where applicable

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the ND Computer Science programme can pursue roles such as:

  • Computer Support Technician

  • Junior Software Developer

  • Network Support Assistant

  • Hardware Maintenance Technician

  • IT Support Officer

  • Data Processing Officer

The programme also provides a solid foundation for progression to Higher National Diploma (HND) or other advanced studies in computing and related disciplines.

Certification and Accreditation

The programme is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). Successful students are awarded the National Diploma (ND) in Computer Science upon completion of coursework, examinations, project work, and SIWES.
